Sermon: The Tenth Sunday after Pentecost

That pesky tenth commandment. I might not be able to tell when you break it. You can't tell when I break it. But, the God we worship is the God to whom, "all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid."

The book I used liberally in this sermon, "The Nine Commandments," by David Noel Freedman can be found here.

Sermon: The 7th Sunday after Pentecost

There's far more to the story of the Good Samaritan, than the story of the Good Samaritan. . .

Sermon: Proper 5C

God doesn't just fill the universe. He touches us.

Sermon: Trinity Sunday

God is Three, and God is One. At the same time.

Some aspects of God are not only difficult, but unbearable.

Sermon: The Seventh Sunday of Easter

Sometimes we get annoyed. Sometimes we upset others. Sometimes people get disturbed.

And even though we may not feel like it. . . God is still there and able to move.

Even when the preacher's sermon illustration blows a breaker.

Sermon: The Sixth Sudnay of Easter

In the beginning we had deep, intimate connection with God and each other. And as it was in the beginning, it will be forever.

Sermon: The Fifth Sunday of Easter

God makes all things new. Even the things we think are just fine the way they were.

Sermon: The Fourth Sunday of Easter

When we didn't have a land, God gave us one. When we didn't have a home, God gave us a home. When it was dry, God gave us rain. When evil set in, God gave us a victory. And, God will do so, forevermore.

Sermon: The Second Sunday of Easter

John wrote the story of the apostle Thomas into his Gospel to proclaim who Jesus is, and who Jesus isn't. And who he is, is the Light of the World.

The book by Dr. Elaine Pagels, which I quoted from in the sermon can be found here.

Sermon: Easter Day

The Resurrection of Jesus from the dead changed the world forever. It was a 'one time event.' In that singular event death and sin were conquered. Jesus on the cross and Jesus' empty tomb contained the victory of Life that we, and the whole world, needed. And yet, Jesus' triumph over death wasn't inconsistent with the rest of the story of God. In fact, it fits right in.

Sermon: Palm Sunday

Being good, doing good, and helping other people is nice. It's good. Hard to claim that you're a faithful Christian if you're being bad, doing bad, and ignoring other people. . . but there is more to it than that. Because of our faith the Jesus who came among us in great humility, died, and rose again lives in us. And that's huge.

The Fifth Sunday in Lent

Some people don't like their gods doing 'new' things. Some people don't want to get their hopes up about 'new' things.

But, our God - the God who said 'Let there be Light!,' the God who split the Red Sea, and came among us in a manger in Bethlehem - our God is the God who does New Things.

Sermon: The Fourth Sunday in Lent

At some point in life we're the prodigal son. At some point in a life of faith we're the other son. But, this parable is always drawing us to be more like the father: forgiving, rejoicing, and throwing a good party.

Sermon: The Third Sunday in Lent

After three years of a fig tree not producing any fruit, the owner relented and said to 'cut it down.' The guy in charge of the care of the tree said, 'wait a minute, why don't I dig around it and put some manure on it, and see what happens.

Wait a minute. . . why didn't he do that after the first year? The second year? He knew what needed to be done, he just didn't do it.

Sermon: The Second Sunday in Lent

Jesus said he wished Jerusalem would have been willing to let him shelter it like a mother hen would shelter a brood a chicks. But, the brood was unwilling.

Are we willing? Are you?

Sermon: The First Sunday in Lent

Yes, Satan came to tempt Jesus - but what the story is really about is how Jesus prepared for that encounter. And when we emulate Jesus' spiritual preparation we too can face anything without flinching.

Sermon: Ash Wednesday

Lent is a time for us to remember and recapture the spiritual disciplines that Jesus expected his followers to use to forge an authentic relationship with God.

Sermon: The Last Sunday of Epiphany

When Moses came down from the mountaintop after an amazing experience of the Presence of God he was a totally changed man. When Peter came down from the mountaintop after an amazing experience of the Presence of God. . . he wanted to take a nap.

Which would you like to emulate?

Sermon: Instructed Eucharist

Why do we worship? Why do we worship the way we do? What is the foundation of our worshiping style in the Episcopal Church? Answers to these and more questions are in the attached mp3!

The Sunday Forum: Heresy 101 - Gnosticism

The first of the ancient church heresies we looked at was Gnosticism. Made popular by many recent books and movies, including The DaVinci Code, Gnosticism is based on the belief that there is some 'secret knowledge' out there. Which sounds interesting. . . until you hear what some of the knowledge actually is. . .

Click on the link above to hear the 30 minute class, and then join us this Sunday in Post Chapel from 9:15-9:45 to hear about the ancient heresy of Marcionism!

Sermon: The Fourth Sunday after the Epiphany

First Corinthians 13 is beautiful, well-known, and about so much more than just a nice reading for a wedding. It's about the Christian life, Christian discipleship, and maturing in the full faith of Jesus.

And, the audio quality here is so awful. Sorry, there was a malfunction somewhere, and we'll get it fixed for next week. . .

Sermon: The Third Sunday after the Epiphany

Sr. Eleanor Francis of the Community of St. John Baptist gave the sermon this week while Fr. Rick led the vestry retreat.

Sermon: The Second Sunday after the Epiphany

At the wedding in Cana of Galilee, Jesus changed water into wine. A LOT of wine. And, he made the 'good stuff.' This sign points to some important aspects of the Presence of Jesus in our world, and in our lives.

Sermon: The Baptism of Our Lord

The Baptism of Jesus was a big deal. Our baptism is a big deal. And, the big deal about Jesus' baptism has a lot to do with the big deal about ours: it gives us our identity as children of God, and we get our marching orders for ministry.

Sermon: The Second Sunday of Christmas

There's an ugly truth: When Jesus was born, he was immediately the target of assassination. Herod wanted to kill him. And when his family took him and fled to Egypt, he opened up the ancient storyline of redemption, hope, and the Light shining in the darkness.
